The mut-see in Italy are obviously Rome, Florence and Pisa, Venice.
But all Italy is a beautiful land, from the Alps to the crystal southern seas. You could choose a region ad make a tour of it. the most famous are Tuscany www.turismo.toscana.it and Campania http://www.turismoregionecampania.it/ (Naples, Sorrento...), but Liguria http://www.regione.liguria.it/MenuSezione.asp?Parametri=5_6_2_$5_6_2_$Turismo_in_Liguria$0$ , Marche www.turismo.marche.it , Emilia Romagna http://www.emiliaromagnaturismo.it/ , Umbria www.umbria2000.it/ , Sicily www.regione.sicilia.it/Turismo/ are marvellous.
Italy is in general safe. I am a woman, I live here, I travel here and I never had a problem. Of course is better to pay always attention in the cities with many tourists and in cities like Naples.

Try Rosemary at Vineyard Travel, rnigro@pacbell.net. She is an Italian specialist but does charge a plan-to-go fee but it is well worth while.

Yeah, the first time I went I did the tour thing, but I got to Rome a couple of days beofre tour started and checked it out on my own cause he tour only spent a little time in Rome, The Tour went from Rome to Florence to Lake Lugano via Pisa, Genoa and Milan, to Venice stop in Ravenna to Assisi to Sorreto/Capri with stop in Pompei, back to Rome with stop at Monte Cassino.

Gives you all the highlights so you can figure out where you want to go the when you return, and you will want to return.

Either take a Perillo Tour or visit Venice (once) then Florence then Rome. This is a good first impression
