What is the best way for a family to travel from Naples to Positano?
Additional Details Going to positano to meet friends.
For limo service - I recommend: http://www.benvenutochauffeurservice.com/indice.asp You will have to e-mail them to get a quote for your trip. Click on the "transfers" tab.
You can also try a taxi which should run about €100 for the trip. You can also ask the limo or taxi driver to stop to take some wonderful pictures.
By train/bus - Take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento from Naples/Napoli Garibaldi station, lower floor of Napoli Centrale station walk. Once in Sorrento, catch a SITA bus to Positano, a little less than an hour. The Sita stops above Positano: Chiesa Nuova or Sponda are the main stops...make sure you know where you are going and where is best for you to get off. From there, you might walk, do stairs, or take an "internal" yellow bus to get to your destination.
Circumvesuviana timetables - Use Napoli for Naples

tren italia-- cheap and easy -- just get the resevered seating.
There are better places than positano--- that is such a tourists place. Try Ricardi or tropea - both cliff side- less expensive and less trendy---- unless you are an aging hipster and like that whole "under the tuscan sun crowd"

We took the ferry from naples to capri. Did some sight seeing at capri (The blue grotto is amazing) then took the ferry from capri to sorrento. From Sorrento you can take a cab or bus. This way you can see the most of Italy without being stuck on a train all day.
