At the railway station; if you need to book (for some train like Eurostar is mandatory) then buy the ticket at least one day before, if you can; you can buy it till before departure, but the risk is to not find place anymore.
For booking in advance, you can do at Trenitalia site: if you choose the "ticketless" option, you'll receive a code through e-mail.
Explore the site for any info. |

Most Italian stations have multilingual machines. you chose a destination on the touch screen then choose a time/ date. It then asks for money, you feed it it gives out a ticket. Dead easy. |

Buying a train ticket in Italy is very simple, just follow these steps:
1. Go to the train station.
2. Find the automated ticket machine - they are easy to use and usually quicker than waiting in line. You can select the language option (English is the British flag, don't look for an American flag).
3. Choose your departing station and your arrival city. It will show you different options and you can select First Class, Second Class, and usually if you want to pre-pick a seat (window, aisle, etc.). My suggestion is that if you can afford it (and it is usually NOT much more expensive), select First Class. First Class seats are cleaner, you can reserve a seat and guarantee it will be there for you (Second Class can be full and you may have to stand or sit in the aisles), and usually have compartments that are more private.
4. You can pay with credit card right there and the tickets will be dispensed immediately. If you have reserved a specific seat a second card will come with the ticket that shows the reservation. If you are doing this on the same day as you are traveling then that is the only proof that the seat is reserved in your name - don't lose it. If you do it ahead of time then they will put your name above your seat (small white paper) ahead of time.
5. Once you have your ticket in hand, be sure that prior to boarding the train you stamp it in any of the yellow meters located throughout the train stations. This validates the ticket.
6. The tickets will have your train number, seat number (if selected) and car number. The outbound trains are listed on a display board somewhere inside the train station and just look for your train number and arrival city. It will show you what "bin" your train will be coming into and you can board the train there. Sometimes they will change the bin number, so keep watching the display. Usually the cars are in order and finding yours is relatively easy. If you happen to get on the wrong car, don't worry - all cars are connected and you can walk between them easily.
Good luck and enjoy the trains in Italy! It is a fantastic way to travel and see the countryside. |

You can buy it on the web site. www.trenitalia.com
You have to sign in the website. It is really simple, and you don't pay the service! You have to earn a credit card.
You can also decide to buy it in a railway station or in a travel agency in Italy. |

The best way from the Train Station |

There are several ways.
1. You can buy on line and I've seen that you already been provided the address.
2. Directly at the station. For sleeping cars and Eurostar travel you may have to buy a day ahead or even days ahead in order to find availability.
3. Travel agencies in Italy generally provide train ticket service. |
