Probably some small town out side of Bari or Palermo. In any case you'll find cheap(er) digs the further south (of the Po River) you go. |

I'll suggest you Rimini.
It isn't in south, but it is very cheap!
In south the life is less expansive, but the hotel and the turism in general isn't cheap! |

I would say somewhere in southern Italy. The only problem is that they south has very high unemployment rates. In fact, a lot of southerners go to the north to work. |

Staying with family is the cheapest way to visit Italy. If you don't have any family then I suggest staying at any pensione which is basically a bed & breakfast with a dinner thrown in. The cost will vary depending on the exchange rate. |
