Previously, there used to be difference. The Postal Service in India, used Rail, Road & Air service, for moving the mail and used to charge seperately for Air Mail. But, there is no distinction, now They use all three modes, now also. But rates are same.

Hi Melwyn!

The norm is for Air Mail post to go by air, and ordinary post, usually by rail, postbus, carriers etc.

Hope that helps.

Air mail is faster and more expensive, normal mail is cheap but slow ;-)
