What is the easiest way to get to Sorrento from Rome with luggage and no rental car?

Is trying to take a train or bus preferred?

You have to take a train to Napoli by the national railway
You can see all the hours and prices here
http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=3fdbe14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD

Then you have to look for the private railway named "circumvesuviana" (it means "around Vesuvio") which arrives to Sorrento in 50 minutes, price of ticket euros 3,50.

Check all the hours and prices of the first because we have many ranges of trains. "Espresso" is very cheap but sometimes it can be full of people, dirty, late (only sometimes it depends from your luckyness). Moreover I guess that on the line Roma-Napoli you have espressos only during the night and this cannot work to reach Sorrento later. IC (intercity) and ES (eurostar) have different surcharges and sometimes you are obliged to reservation.

I do not reccommend taking a cab or the bus from Roma to Sorrento. It is a near four hour drive since Sorrento is past Napoli and Napoli is a good two and half hours from Roma, so your cab fare will be extremely high. Your best bet would be to go rent a car and drive. You will see a lot more of Italy this way and once you get outside of Napoli you will be driving on a coastal highway with amazing views! You can take the train to Napoli and catch the one to Sorrento from there, however, with a lot of luggage you will be in for a stressful ride. Also, make sure you are prepared for Napoli because you will be switching trains in their stazione centrale which will probably put you in one of the biggest culture shocks you will ever experience if you do not know what you are getting in to.

Because taking a train/ bus can be uncomfortable, crammed, and unsafe, taking a cab is the best way to go. However, it is more expensive, but the driver takes you right where you want to go, it's quicker because there are no other stops, and you can trust that your luggage will not be stolen. With trains, there is also the inconvinience of having to catch the right one( although, i guess you could say that cabs might be hard to catch, although, in a city like Rome, there are more than enough cabs to take to where you need to be). The drive is about 2.5 hours, and you would be much more comfortable in a cab than maybe not even getting a seat on an overcrowded bus. The choice is yours.
Hope i helped :))

P.S. If you've never been around that area before, Sorrento is beautiful...you might want to try going to Capri and Positano too, they're also gorgeous, and of course the food is exquisite :)

high speed train (very confortable) from rome to naples and a normal train from naples to sorrento (they are at 20 min of trip)

We've just gone to crazyland. The regular fare for taking a cab from Rome to Sorrento would be close to 300 euros for just mileage - I don't know if they add for time or a surcharge to rides that are 175 miles (the cab driver has to get back home) or not.

I don't believe there is a train station in Sorrento. If you've been there, you'll know that Sorrento is on a peninsula cut off by rugged mountains. The road there is pretty narrow and windy. I believe the best you can do by train is Rome -> Naples -> Castellammare Di Stabia which is about 15 miles ($50 cab ride?) from Sorrento.

The bus takes you right to Sorrento.
