The Blues-it's in reference to the team color of Italy, as their Jerseys are blue so that is their nickname.

Azzurro = means "Sky blue"

(Azzurri) is sort of like an adjective that is "plural",

Like calling a red sports team "The Reds".

Just a good way to call the team.

E5'sWife
thats how italians call their soccer team during world cups. azzurri, wich means "blue" is from the color of the players shirts

Blue.
It's masculine plural since in Italian both nouns and adjectives are gendered and change with number.

[Extracted from Wikipedia]: The traditional jersey color of the national team (as well as of all Italian teams and athletes, except in motor sports) is sky blue (azzurro, in Italian), and therefore national team members are nicknamed Azzurri.

See original source.

Vittorio
We use "azzurri" to name our national teams players (not only football), because of the color they wear. Azzurro (singular of azzurri) was the royal family (Savoia) colour. It wasn't changed when the Italian Rebublic was born in 1946, because for too many years "azzurri" identified italian naltional teams
