You're thinking of the bus-boats called 'vaporetti' (singular = 'vaporetto').
The vaporetto canal-bus service began in Venice at the end of the 19th century and at that time they were, indeed, steam-powered. The word 'vaporetto' actually means 'little steamboat'.
These days, I'm afraid, they have ordinary diesel engines. |

its vaporetto (vapore means steam in italian) and its used like a bus for normal cities. |

the once "steamed-powered" boat is called vaporètto, commonly called vaporìno by Venetian residents (plural vaporètti and vaporìni). the ones in service are quite old and may look... steam engines operated, but they have diesel engines. projects are ongoing for electric vaporetti to replace these ones.
(who dared say gondola????? a gondola is the most romantic boat in the world, with a rowing gondolier!! the engine of the gondola is love :) |

There are no more steam-powered boats in use in Venice anymore. They are now diesel.
They are called Vaporetto, or Vaporetti for more than one. |
