I used to live in Liguria, so this is difficult for me - there are so many nice cities! Here are my thoughts:
1. Genova. Most people think of it only as a port city and very industrial, but you have to get into the heart of the city to see the history and the medieval architecture. If you walk along Corse Italia, it is absolutely beautiful - a boardwalk along the Mediterranean that stretches from near the port to Boccadasse, a quaint fishing village that is picturesque. Along the way there are fantastic restaurants perched atop the cliffs overlooking the sea and a great gelateria (Gelatitalia). The main street in Genova is Via XX Settembre and has great shopping. There are fantastic museums in Via Garibaldi and Piazza Ferrari leads to many small streets that could take days to navigate!
On the outskirts of Genova is Nervi - a beautiful small village that has a wonderful big park, fantastic views and walking paths, and some great shopping as well.
Portofino is beautiful, too, but is rather small and very touristy many times of the year - in fact, you can hear English there more often than Italian!
Just on the other side of the penninsula from Portofino is San Fruttuoso (I think that's spelled correctly!). It is a very unusual place that is only accessible by either a VERY long walk or by boat, which you can catch in Camogli. There is a very old abbey there as well as two restaurants, sand beaches (hard to find in some areas of Liguria) and a beautiful place to swim.
Recco is also very nice and has the most awesome Focaccia made with cheese.
I really think the most beautiful scenery-wise would have to be Cinque Terre - 5 separate small villages built on the cliffs overlooking the sea and full of vineyards. BEAUTIFUL!
If you're looking for something medieval, the town of Sarzana, just inland from Cinque Terre and on the border of Tuscany, has an amazing castle in the center. The last time I was there they were renovating it, so I'm not sure of its condition at this time.
I could go on and on - but I think this answered your question to some degree! |

Genova is a wonderful, big city. If you want to read about it and see some pix, check this out: http://www.thetravelzine.com/it_w2006_6genova.htm
If you prefer smaller Ligurian cities, you can read about some of them here: http://www.thetravelzine.com/italy7.htm |
