based on our experience, check the weather for it first. the day we went, it was a 3-4 hour drive and the stupid thing was in a thick cloud. you couldnt see more than 2 feet in front of you. of course we went up, we didnt drive that far for nothing, but it was disappointing. im sure in the warmer months that isnt really a problem.
i would pair vesuvius with pompeii. get up and hit vesuvius early and then spend the rest of the day in pompeii. we drove in our rental car, so we werent worried about catching any trains or buses. |

I was in south Italy a few years ago. I would go to Naples and take a train to Pompeii and Herculanium (spelling?). They are both near Mt. V and have ruins to see from the eruption. It takes about 30 - 45 minutes to get to Pompeii from Naples by train. |
