From a historical point of view I don;t think many places can beat Roma . . . but I would suggest giving Ravenna a chance (look it up, not many people know about it but historically very significant). Have to say, one of my favourite places is the medieval city of Bologna (or Bononia as it used to be called at the time). Walking through the city now is like walking through it then. There are still the medieval buildings, the medieval markets (still in use!!!!), medieval pubs, medieval university, medieval walls . . . there are so many hidden secrets to discover and not many tourists!!! A truely amazing city if you are into medieval history . . . also you can see parts of the ancient city of Bononia from the newly restored Sala Borsa (the city library in Piazza Maggiore, near the Nettuno statute). You can walk in and the floor is made of glass which allows you to see the ruins of the ancient city.

Piedmont - Scenically it is one of Italy’s most varied regions. The landscape changes from Alpine peaks in the north through to the rice paddies of the West. Similarly from North to South the landscape is equally impressive – from Alps through to the rolling hills of the wine country south of Turin.
The light, like that of Tuscany, has an ephemeral beauty that is extremely hard to capture. |

Vernazza on the north west coast.
It is small, old, no cars great walks to the next towns along coastal paths, great food and wine, warm people and one of the most romantic places I have ever been to. |
