Puglia (or apulia in English) is by far the best for summer. You can find it's best beaches at the gargano, monopoli, or otranto. For sights there are the castellana grotte, the biggest caves in italy, and lecce has some of the best boroque stile churches in the country. If you want medioeval cathedrals and old towns, Trani and Giovinazzo are excelent. Also the Pugliese seafood and pizza is the best! Trentino Alto-Adige is the best for winter. I reccomend going to Mont Elmo for skiing.

LIGURIA - without a doubt! Although the other regions all have their good points and fabulous things to do/see, my all-time favorite has to be Liguria. Not only is it centrally located, it has beautiful coastlines (Nervi), harbors (Portofino, Genoa), gorgeous medieval villages (Sarzana, Dolceacqua), cliffside vineyards (Cinque Terre) and Focaccia to die for! The city of Genova (Genoa), although its reputation is of a port city that is industrialized, has an immense number of things to do/see and an incredible history. And it's only a short distance from France, Switzerland, and the rest of Italy as well!

I lived on the Almalfi coast for two years, therefore Gaeta, Formia, Sperlonga, and Naples are my favorite.
