What kind of clothes should I bring along when traveling to Rome, Venice and Athens next month?

I'm 45, mostly wear shorts and tank tops in the summer and want to dress appropriately when traveling to Europe from North America. Recommendations for some last-minute purchases? I have good walking shoes and sandals.

Just make sure you wear something to keep cool.

If you are planning on visiting a lot of churches, i.e. the Vatican, you must have yuor shoulders and knees covered. I usually wear a knee length skirt, but you can bring something to wrap around your waist, a sarong, and around your shoulders. It is nice to just be able to pull them out of your bag and then go in the church. I did that my first time around. Greece isn't so restrictive about clothing... just plan on someone shouting at you in Greek. It sounds mean sometimes, but Greece is awesome. If you want to wear a skirt, I find that sometimes they are cooler... you will be fine otherwise....

Have fun! Buon viaggio!

Italians don't wear shorts and sandals unless they're at the beach, so you'll look American if you wear then and you'll stick out the a sore thumb. Wear a sundress to keep cool and blend in, or wear shorts and don't blend in....

I just came back from Europe and it is extremely hot. First of all being in Italy in the month of August is not recomended since a lot of stores are closed and it is hot in the cities.
If you go anyway it is very casual and you will see mainly tourists. Italians like to be dressed but mainly at night, but casual and nice.

WOW-Lucky you-I`ve been to all 3 of these places in the last year--I would simply say take lots of very COOL clothes-Athens will be scorching hot-definitely take sunglasses and /or a hat-you`ll need it-we baked when we went to see the Acroplolis-there`s not much shade-a lot of the historic sites are high up-so be prepared-and always carry water with you.

We were there a month ago-and the heat was incredible-Rome was the same in April-we went for Easter.

As for beautiful Venice-good shoes a must-it can be very damp-obvious really-but I would assume it will be hot-like most of Italy in the Summer-I go back in September-and I can`t wait !

Have a good time.

you're look is our stereotype's look of the americans but if you're coming in here just to buzz around, walking a lot to discover art and related things i think you're look is the appropriate. (it's 10 a.m. and it's already hot...)

enjoy your stay.
