in the past, romans would go to the coloseum (for free, of course) and watch gladiators fight with gladiators or with animals. (contrary to popular opinion, gladiators were not killed everyday). nowadays as a tourist in rome, its enough to simply park yourself on the Spanish Steps and do some people-watching. But otherwise, there's always something or the other going on at the Parco della Musica and of course, if you cant attend an opera at the La Scala in Milan, at least attend one in Rome.

I'm not a scholar, but you know they had gladiator fights. They had theater. They liked to see people being slaughtered and people having.... making love. They liked nasty stuff, I know.
