The official language in 200AD was Latin as that area was still part of the Roman Empire. Italy, the country as we know it today, didn't come into existence until the 19th century.

Latin.
But as the Roman Empire spread in hundreds of colonies and territories, and slaves were brought into Rome's Territory from all over, several other languages and dialects were spoken.

The Italian language known nowadays was in a way picked from Florence out of the dialects available around 1800. A famous Italian writer from Milano, Alessandro Manzoni, writing his major masterpiece "I Promessi Sposi" when he came to edit the script he said he would go and "wash his book by the river Arno", meaning he would make a journey and correct the language according to what spoken in Florence (where the river Arno is).
Italy is one Country since 1861.

Latin... (Latino in Italian)
was spoken in all the europe..FRANCE GERMANY SPAIN, ENGLAND, ROMANIA, TURKEY, GREECE ....

AND NOW WE, Italian, MUST SPEAK ENGLISH.. :(

The LATIN become Italian only afther DANTE ALIGHIERI (around 1300), was a Florentine poet of the Middle Ages.
His central work, the Divina Commedia, is often considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature.

Actually before I read your comments I thought Latin, but even moreso Greek. There were many settlers from Greece in Italy. I've spent time in Siciliy and most of the ruins are Greek influenced. So I'd say Latin and Greek.
