Grapes (for wine) can be grown in almost every part of Italy and there are 20 different wine regions:

Aosta Valley (Valle D'Aosta)
Piedmont (Piemonte)
Liguria
Lombardy (Lombardia)
Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Veneto
Emilia-Romagna
Tuscany (Toscana)
Marche (Le Marche)
Umbria
Lazio
Abruzzo
Molise
Campania
Basilicata
Apulia (Puglia)
Calabria
Sicily (Sicilia)
Sardinia (Sardegna)

In my opinion Italy's most famous grape is the sangiovese and these grapes are grown in Tuscany where chianti is made.

I would have to say the most southern part like Sicily has some very good wines, some of them are production and the others are home made wines that are so good that cant be produced at all.

Due to it's landscapes and geographical position in the Mediterranean Sea, Italy has a wide wine tradition.

All 20 Italian Regions produce wine, white, red, dessert and meditation, sparkling and still, sweet or slightly bitter.

My personal choice.
Lazio:
-white- Est!Est!Est! di Montefiascone, Aleatico

Tuscany:
-red- Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano

Umbria:
-red- Sagrantino di Montefalco, Rosso di Montefalco
-white- Orvieto Classico

Sardinia:
-white- Torbato
-red- Cannonau

Sicilia:
-red- Nero d'Avola

Campania:
-white- Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo
