I stayed in Montepucliano.....long story but I was supposed to stay in Sienna, then missed the last bus and had to get a train to Chuisi (got a ticket for not validating ticket) and then bus to Montepulciano!! I was stressed when I got there, but when I was the town it was lovely. Great views of the surrounding area, good wine and I was so pleased I stayed there.

Within 40 - 50 miles there are many great places. Siena and Orvieto are fairly large cities that are just wonderful to be in.
Montalcino is smaller but a great place. Civita is without question one of the most unusual small towns in Italy.
