Get a pair of VALLEVERDE or GEOX.They are soft and trendy even with medium heels. They're orthopedics but considered high fashion in Italy and the rest of Europes.
Infact, wear what you want, not what others want.
Have a nice stay in Italy. |

Definitly dont wear tennis shoes, unless you want people to stare at you. I would wait till you get to italy, if you're in rome, there is a street in front of the Piazza di Spagnia that has crazy shops, you'll find plenty of designer stuff there. |

i dont reccomend bulky tennis shoes, but sleek sneakers like converse or pumas can work. flats are another option .. but the comfort wont be so great! |

I'm not sure flats would work - if you walk in flats for a while, they start chafing your heels. |

Young people do wear tennis shoes with jeans in Italy!!! There is not problem with that. I live in Italy and I rather use flat comfortable shoes, like Geox and Camper (my favorites), but lots of young people wear tennis shoes. Heels are ok to go to work or to go out in the evening, but I wouldn't wear them if I will be walking a lot. |

Take dif. kinds of flats with a very small heel and comf. sandals (not flip-flops)
Brands like Tod's, Ecco, Clarks, Merrel and Geox are good options |

Does it really matter, where whatever is comfortable. You're going to be labelled a tourist anyway, so don't worry about it. |
