Hello, Rome is a great city with enormus history. Walking in the streets of Rome is like to walk in a big living museum.
I suggest you to visit the places below:
# Colosseum (Colosseo)
# Pantheon
# Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi)
# Roman Forum (Foro Romano)
# Vatican Museums
# Borghese Gallery (Galleria Borghese)
# Piazza Navona
# Trastevere
# Capitoline Museum (Museo Capitolino)

Have with you a map of the city and you'll have a great time.
Enjoy!

if you are straight then go to pantheon, piazza venetian, Colosseum, etc etc

Immerse yourself in the culture: study the art and history and watch how people live in Rome. If you value your life, do not drive around Rome. Also be careful of mopeds (there's millions of them)

I'd recomend the following;

The Vatican and its museums which include the Sistine Chapel.
Castel St Angelo
The Colosseum
The Forum
Palatine
Trajan's Markets
Circus Maximus
Capitoline Museums
Villa Borghese
St Pietro in Vincoli
Trevi fountain
Piazza Navona
Spanish steps
Via Appia
Ostia

I recommend the Eye Witness Travel Guide books, they're great.

Buna fortuna
