What should I wear when visiting the Vatican? |
I'm leaving for Italy in about 2 weeks and I'm planning on visiting the Vatican. I'm a teenage girl, and I'm not really sure what to wear? Would I be okay wearing jeans and a jacket? Or is it necessary to wear a long skirt? I obviously will not be wearing shorts or a tank top since when I'm going it's supposed to be in the 50's or so.. but can someone help direct me in what is acceptable to wear? Thanks! |

St Peter's has a very strict dress code that is enforced. Absolutely no shorts, no skirts above the knee's and no bare shoulders are permitted in either St. Peter's or the Vatican Museum. BTW, if you are showing to much skin, the guards have paper capes, similar to what you wear in a doctor's office, that they will have to you and insist you put it on as a cover!! You are correct that Tank Tops are Taboo.. Men may Not wear hats, but it is still a sing of respect for women to wear a scarf or small covering on their heads. |

There is a 'dress code' you must meet to go into the Vatican ... and since the Vatican is a 'country' inside of the 'city of Rome' you MUST fit that code. If you are going to be doing just the 'regular tourist stuff' (including a visit inside the Basilica (church) then wear what you would wear when visiting the most important church around, like a Cathedral (the Basilica is actually the 'Cathedral' where the Pope 'sits' so it's more important than a Cathedral, which just has a special 'seat' for the Bishop or Archbishop) ... in other words, wear a dress that goes at least 3" below your knees and a jacket or sleeves to your elbow. No scarf in necessary any more. If you are going to be in a Papal Audience (see him in person, even across the square) the same clothes will do. If you are going to meet the Pope, then you need to be 'dressed up' a bit more but still 'conservative' ... and that longer skirt and long sleeved shirt and/or jacket would be more in order. This is just 'common sense' ... you may wear jeans if you want, but you may be asked to leave the Vatican and not see everything while you are there. |

That is fine as long as it's not extremely not modest or with bare shoulders |

You just need your shoulders and knees covered. No hats allowed either. |
