What should a 25 year old Irishman travelling to Venice for a week alone do? |
I'm heading to Venice for a week next week and was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
Interests include more culture and history and people rather than nightlife (i'm Irish-if i drink i'll prob sink the bloody place hehehe).

A week is a long time in Venice. You may want to take a day trip to Padua, Vincenza, or other parts of the Veneto. On the other hand, having a lot of time in Venice could be an advantage. One of the best things to do is simply to walk around the city. You could do this all day for several days in a row. It is simply mesmerizing. At least one morning, get up before sunrise and start strolling through the city while it's still foggy, the sun is barely out, and the church bells are starting to ring. I did this and I'm getting goosebumps just remembering it.
If you're there for a long time you'll get a chance to see everything since Venice is not too big. Sights to see would include the Basilica of San Marco and the Doge's palace in the main Piazza San Marco. But then get out of Piazza San Marco and explore some more. There are some great museums in Venice - the Accademia and the Scuola San Rocco. Also check out the church of Santa Maria dei Friari - it's very gothic and has the famous Titian "Assumption." Heck, if you see any churches, go inside, they're all amazing. But just explore the city. There are so many hidden treasures that most tourists never see. For example, Pisa is not the only place in Italy that has a leaning tower. There are at least two in Venice - see if you can find them.
It's good that you're not into nightlife since it's pretty non-existent in Venice. Plenty of culture and history to keep you busy. As for people, you'll probably encounter other tourists for the most part. Very few people live in Venice anymore - it's not really a city, it's more of a floating Disneyland. It's still awesome though. |

Never been to Venice, but I just answered this to wish you a happy and safe enjoyable trip. You'd better start brushing up on some italian, then you could ask some of the locals to help you find something to do. Take a dictionary with you, just in case.
I agree with you, culture and history should be the point of your trip.

visit san marco square and the church in it. difficult to buy something, prices in venice are not cheap!! I think venice is more or less sad, a little scruffy.. it was a very beautiful city in 1500-1600-1700 |

One week is way to long to go to Venice. Seriously, you should do 3-4 days max, and then head to another city somewhere else in Italy, they are all fantastic... |
