Don't try to pack too much in - like a new hotel and a new city each day. Italy can be divided up into several areas: Rome, Venice, Tuscany, Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Cinque Terre, etc. Each deserves at least 3 days minimum to enjoy without feeling like you missed a lot.

Rome without question is the place to go for a first timer. After that really depends on your personal taste. If you're taking a sweetie, go to Venice. If you like art go to Florence. If you want to go to the ocean... etc.

I like the Florence area as a central location to take day trips to Pisa, Siena, Lucca, San Gimignano, Assisi, etc.

Here is my list of important Italian sights:

Milan
. Cathedral / Duomo
. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Venice
. St. Marks Basilica / Square
. Doge's Palace
. Rialto Bridge
. Murano glass manufacturing
. Burano
. Lido
. Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
. Ca' Pesaro
. Santa Maria dei Miracoli
. Santa Maria Formosa
. Fondazione Querini Stampalia
. San Giorgio dei Greci
. Santa Maria della Salute
. Accademia
. San Rocco
. Tolentini
. Ponte degli Scalzi
Florence
. Uffizi
. Ponte Vechio
. Galleria Della Academia (David)
. Santa Croce
. Piazzale Michelangelo
Lucca
Pisa
. Leaning Tower
Cinque Terra (region)
San Gimignano
Sienna
Assisi
Orvieto
Rome
. Vatican
. Coliseum
. The Forum
. Spanish Steps
. Pantheon
. The Borghese Museum
. Gianicolo
. Piazza Navona
. Trevi Fountain
Ostia Antica
Vesuvius
Pompeii
Capri
Sorrento
Amalfi Coast (region)
Paestum

Of course you'll want to see Rome, Venice, Florence. But do try to check out the smaller less known places. I loved Lucca and Cinque Terra, Carrara and my fave Aosta Valley.

There is so many places to see in Italy and its so beautiful.

are you kidding? Italy is not America where anywhere you go is all the same: McDonalds, gas station and Walmarts. In Italy wherever you go there is something to discover. It's an immense treasure.

well you gotta go to Venice first of all. Rome is nice but i preffer smaller cities like some on the amalfi coast. Sorrento is nice so yeh places like that.

Italy is quite a various and rich country to visit from different point of views: natural environments, landscapes, art, food, wine. For that reason I think that it is worth to be studied a bit before coming and the best thing to do, to my opinion, is to buy a good guide, as Lonely Planet, and study it. Usually you will evem find links to websites on the guide. That way you will work out your own trip, according to your interests and impressions. Of course I could give you the list of names typical of Italy: Rome, Florence, Vaticano, Capri etc. but those are only names, you need to make your own opinion on that, and the only way is doing your homework, as I think each traveller should do before starting a tour.
See the link below could be a starting point
