Go to Trenitalia.com We used the trains to go from Venice to Florence and Rome and it was a piece of cake. Once in Florence you can walk from the station to any part of town easily. It's no more than a 20 - 25 minute walk from ther station to the Ponte Vecchio; that is as long as you don't do too much window shopping along the way. You can even book and guarantee your tickets in advance through Trenitalia.com

Don't rent a motor scooter. It's just too dangerous. The train is safe and inexpensive. The location of the stations in both Florence and Rome is great. I've taken it several times.

if you have a car, that is the easiest. the autostrada #1 shoots straight up there from rome and the toll charges are not the much, less than 5 euros. otherwise, the train is cheap and easiest, you just have to follow that schedule.

curiousgeorge
train. It costs about 40 euro and is a very nice safe trip.

Rent a little motor scooter...it's cheap, and you can buzz thru the tons of traffic!
