What to do about speeding tickets in Italy? |
Hello,
Over the summer, June 24th to July 11th, I was in Italy on vacation. My wife and I rented a car and drove all around the country. I recently received 2 speeding tickets in Italy, for 173 euros each. I was just wondering what my options are. This seems like a ridiculous amount to have to pay, but i also do not want to not pay and then not be able to go back to Italy. In addition to this, I have another charge on my account from Hertz, so i think i have at least a 3rd ticket coming. This scares me to think of how many of these things I may end up getting. Does anyone have any advice on what to do with this? I wasnt trying to be reckless with my speeding, I was most of the time just going with the flow of traffic, not really concerning myself with the speed limit, I figured if everyone else was driving at the speed, that it must be safe (when in Rome right? :-)...) Also, I am wondering if this will affect my US driving record or insurance at all? If anyone can help me with this i would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, |

Pay them! we do...but you wont obviously...
In Italy is NOT allowed to have the speed you like..the fact that some other person was running DONT allow you to do...people get bills here ..and pay it!! If you dont we have to pay YOUR ticket because it will go on the PUBLIC bills...so i have to pay your ticket only because you are an arrogant one? What about if i go in Us and i dont?...Before put the thumbs down like childrend...think about this! |

Let's put it this way! In August 05 I got a parking ticket in Verona. In august 06, I got a letter from the chief of police in Verona requesting payment. they went through Hertz to get the name, address, license number, etc. The letter mentioned what the fine would be etc.if I paid the amount requested and what the penalties would be if I did not..
I contacted my Italian cousins about what happens if I did not pay the fine. Their (all three of them) told me that Italian police are extremely cruel in tracking down those who do not pay the fines ---- to the extent of notifying rental companies about the unpaid fine(s). they advised me to pay it because If I didn't and came back some time later (six months or more), there would be a notification by the autoleggio companies that the fine was due and to not rent the car until the fine had been collected. The decision to Pay or Not to Pay is yours. Good luck. BTW, conversion to Euros and having a bank draft to the italian police agency that gave you the ticket will definitely be a hell of a lot more than 173 Euros. Probably about double after all the banks fees. Again, good luck! |

If you ever plan on renting a car from Hertz again in your lifetime...pay the fines, if not hertz will have to pay them and you will be blacklisted. Its easier and less hassles to just pay the fines. When in Rome....they are really cracking down and speeding..trust me I have gotten quite a few lately. The fine if not paid within 60 days also almost doubles!! |

The others are right, you need to pay these tickets. This may not only affect your ability to rent cars in the future. With more and more records available electronically, this can show up in the computer when you try to enter the country and you might be denied admission.
This should not affect your US records since there is no reciprocity treaty between Italy and the various States. If you were to move here, your US license would not be transferable - you'd have to go through the full process of obtaining an Italian license from scratch. |

Were you stopped and given the ticket? Or did these appear in the mail somehow for example from video monitoring. How fast were you going? |
