A one day trip, hoping it is in the spring, as it is beautiful in the spring. I am going to assume you have never been to Rome before, and therefore will try to include sone beautiful must-sees that are close to each other and accessible. Would be best to bring a map.
Your best bet would be to get to the Spanish Steps area (easy to access via metro and thus no need to take expensive taxis). In this area you will find many historical and beautiful sites within walking distance, these include:
-Spanish Steps (the steps with the famous sunken ship fountain at the end - you can sit on the steps and enjoy the view) and where the museum for Shelley and Keats)
-Piazza del Poppolo (famous piazza with the Egyptian obelisks and the famous twin churches)
- Villa Borghese (a beautiful park just blocks from the Spanish Steps, you can enjoy large green spaces, views of Rome, and visit the museum if inclined-and lucky enough to find an available ticket)
-Via Condotti: the exclusive shopping street of Rome, see the street where Gucci et al display their fares. Its a beautiful street with a lot of character. While there, stop by the famous Antico Cafe Greco (one of the 3 oldest cofe in the world) for an espresso and enjoy the feeling of drinking coffee where the likes of Byron, Shelley, Casanova, and Goethe enjoyed theirs -most likely not all at once:)
-Via del Corso: a long street connecting Piazza Venezia to Pizaa del Popolo in which ancient Romans used to have horse races. The street is now a shopping street, but also a beautiful walk, it will take you past the Italian parliament (from there a short walk to the Pantheon) all the way to Piazza Venezia, which is near the Forum and the Colesseum
-Fontana di Trevi: few blocks from Spanish steps you can see the famous fountain and do the obligatory thorwing of a coin to ensure your next visit to Rome (hopefully for more than a day)

Try one of those double decker bus tours. This way you get an overview of Rome and see from the bus any you don't want to go and actually see.
I liked the colloseum and nearby Roman forum, the Trevi fountain was lovely, The Pantheon interesting (but its nice to know the history and its importance) and the vatican (and sistine chapel at the vatican museums). |
