ehm... the gladiator movie isn't exactly what expects you in Rome (you know, some things have changed in the last 2000 years!!!)
but I would recommend you to bring comfortable shoes, sun protecting cream, sunglasses, nice dress to wear on evenings out and a bright smile!
have fun with your trip! |

Be sure to take a lot of light clothes. It is so hot there this time of year its ridiculous (and I live in Texas)! But remember that a lot of museums have 'rules' about what you can wear. For example, you can't go into the Vatican in a tank top, no matter how nice it is. |

Good walking shoes! The cobblestones there are a nightmare! There are italian girls who can walk the streets in stillettos but I suppose they are total experts since they grew up with that sort of terrain. I'd avoid anything with a heel, unless you were just going to wear them for dinner for an hour or so.
All the sights are reasonable walking distance to one another. You can even sign up for walking tours that take about 3 hours and show you pretty much everything except the Vatican.
Oh and take a purse that has a zipper. Pickpocketers are pretty frequent in Rome, especially on the crowded subways. If your bag has a zipper, keep it shut, and make sure the zipper opening is held close to your chest so no one can slip their hand in. |

No matter what you take...it'll be too much to carry! Money, passport, guidebook, comfortable shoes, a must. Very rough terrain and lots of hills. |

As far as films are concerned, I'd strongly recommend "Roman Holiday", Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, 1953 and "The Agony and the Ecstasy", Charlton Heston, Rex Harrison, 1965.
I find "Spartacus", Kirk Douglas, 1960 to be more Rome relevant than Gladiator.
I recommend a laminated city map with a map of the Metro. Of course bring a camera.
I've added a couple links to some Roman history that you will still see a lot of on your trip: "Romulus and Remus" and "SPQR". I think if you read these it will enhance your visit because they may otherwise be overlooked. |
