I was there in August and it was smoldering. Worst time of the year to go. As far as clothes go, pack light, and go shopping! Look at what the locals are wearing. Italians have great style

I dont know right now, but i went to rome and pisa in july a couple years ago and i was really hot is shorts and sleeveless, I know that if you are going to see the major churches like in the vatican city you have to wear pants and have at least short sleeves on because its respectful and they wont let you in otherwise... its always good to have both, but i think its better if you have clothes for warm weather. If you are still not sure look up their weather today on the yahoo weather thing... thats how i get all my forecasts!

it would be really helpful to know what time of year you are planning on going. when we went in early march we wore layers. a tshirt, light sweater, pants. some days we needed another coat, gloves, and a hat for our head and ears.
