The old town is small, but interesting. In the area around Piazza Maggiore, there's a nice Basilica, the museum of the Duomo, an archeological museum, the Neptune fountain, the remains of several medieval buildings including the palazzo of King Enzo. The two towers are interesting. If you're willing to climb the 500 (approx) steps, there are good views over the city. If you're facing the duomo and go through the arch to your left, you'll come to the market area - some excellent opportunities for picking up food.

The Basilica of St. Apollinare has some really nice mosaics.

The Ferrari museum is near Modena - a short train ride from Bologna.

The City of Food Festival is in September - that's spread over the area around the old town. Depending on exactly when you're there, you might find it running. There's also an urban dance festival, the Bologna Festival (mostly classical music) and a book festival in September.

It's also only an hour to Florence on the train.

If you're there over the second weekend in September, I can highly recommend a trip to Marostica for the living chess game. This is one of the most spectacular festivals in Italy. It's only held every other year (the even years) http://www.marosticascacchi.it/a_2_EN_9_1.html

Yovaa!
I'm from Rome, 4 hours away, I've never been to Bologna!

the best thing in Bologna is the food. besides that it's famous for being a place for students and culture. they have the most ancient University in the world.

Also, walk in the porticoes and window shop, there are lots. Go to the "Seven Churches" at S. Stefano. The Archeological Museum is cool and had free entry.
