The best way to see Italy is by train. By car is nice too because you get to see many of the smaller towns but driving is terrible. If you do drive, DO NOT DRIVE IN NAPLES!. Naples is nice, I lived there a year, but its dirty and the driving is the worst I have seen in the world. Generally speaking, the farther north you go in Italy, the cooler the weather, the cleaner it get and the more Germanic the influence. The further south you go, the more North African influences you see, it gets hotter and the life style is more laid back.
Dont miss other travel opportunities you get by visiting Italy. There are ferries to Greece, Malta, Libya and loads of other locations.
Crime is common in Italy but not violent crime. Petty theft, pick pocketing and purse snatch is a problem. Make sure you get travel insurance and carry travelers checks and keep your passport and credit cards safe. It can be a good idea to make copies of them and keep them in a secure location. I emailed scanned copies and emailed them to a secure person where I could refer to if they were lost or stolen.
Its also wise to check with the US State Departments travel warning just before you go. The site contains various details of travel, medical and security issues that affect US citizens in the country.
The State Dep site can be found at:
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1146.html
These are all just precautions and I am sure you will have a safe and fantastic time in Italy. I loved it there and wish I were going with you.
I forgot to mention the seasons. Italy is very hot and dry in the summer and it can be uncomfortable to travel. The best seasons are probably April-May and September-October. You still have reasonably warm weather, you beat the tourist rush and low season makes hotels and travel cheaper. |

The most popular cities in Italy are Rome Florence and Milan. Rome because the trevi fountain and the mighty Colosseum. Florence and Milan because there are a lot a museums there and fascinating things about famous artists.Another great part of Italy is the island right off of Italy called Sicily. Probably the best time to travel is around middle through end of August and the begging of September because most people are starting school so they wont want to travel. The best way to get to Italy in by plane. It is the fastest way to get there but might be the most expensive way. You could also take a plane across to the Atlantic border then take a boat all the way to Italy or it depends on what part of Italy you stay in. |

By train is the best way and it is faster. Every tourist book u read will tell u Florence, Rome, Venice, Milan, Sorrento. R u adventurous? Care to see where the Greeks colonized and built their temples? A good time to visit is April-June.
Sicily- the old temples in Agrigento, Segeste, Piazza di Armenina, and Siracusa. Palermo, Cefalu, and Monreale for the old cathederals. For a scenic view of the N. African coast, the top of Erice. Ferry over to the out lying islands, Stromboli, Vulcano, or Isole Eolie.
Sardegna- the old town of Alghero where the Catalan presence is still viable. The beaches of Cagliari, Palau or Cala Gonone.
Naples/Campania- Most people will say Napoli is dangerous, dirty, and not worth ur time... I disagree. Over crowded-yes, dirty...sure; but visit any major overcrowded city and see much of the same. The south is another country on its own. Its was where the ancient Romans vacationed. I lived there for 6 years and still didn't see it all. In Naples see Castel Nuovo, Capodimonte museum, Mergellina, Posillipo then travel south to Salerno, Paestum, Amalfi Coast. Do ferry over to Capri but don't forget about Ischia or Procida. Of course do see, Pompei, Ercolano, and Vesuvio.
Venture over to the Southeast- the Region of Puglia and travel to Alberobello, see the enchanting Truilli villages. I tell u it won't disappoint u. The beaches of Bari or the baroque town of Lecce. As u can tell I adored the south.
I have ventured north and have many favorites there too; Assisi, Orvieto, Perugia, Gubbio, Spoleto, Cinque Terra, Verona, Bologna to name a few. yes I've visited the major cities and enjoyed them too, but I enjoyed my visits to the other towns much more. If u'd like to know more, let me know. Ciao Ciao and enjoy ur trip |
