What would be the best (worth-visit) town in Tuscany apart from Florence? |
I fell in love with the Tuscany area after I saw it on TV. Having said that, I'm not that interested in Florence. I'd rather be interested in the typical "360 degree" hilly wheat/olive Tuscany. However, I cannot stay in the Tuscany area as long as one month due to my job...
What would be the best (worth-visit) Tuscany town apart from Florence?
S. Gimignano?
Siena?
Arezzo?
Pienza?
Assisi
Or...?
Again, I'd like to immerse myself with typical "360 degree" hilly Tuscany. |

It depends on when you're here and what exactly you're interested in. Siena is very nice, but is a larger city than many of the hill towns. San Gimignano is smaller, but very tourist oriented. Arezzo is a very nice town - the old hilltop town is particularly interesting when the giostra is running and not a crowded as Siena during their Palio. Assisi isn't in Tuscany - it's in Umbria, but is another very nice town close to Perugia which is also worth visiting, especially during the Umbria JAzz Festival or the Eurochocolate festival.
You might also consider some of the smaller hill towns like San Miniato, Montepulciano or Monteriggioni. |

Val d'Orcia with its amazing hill-towns ...as Pienza, Montepulciano, Monticchiello, Bagno Vignoni and its main "piazza" of steamy water, Montalcino and the nearby Sant'Antimo Abbey where it is beautiful to hear monks chanting prayers. This just to name the most popular ones.
By the way, Assisi is in Umbria region. |

If you are interested in Tuscany typical area I suggest you the Chianti area...
It is well known for its production of wines of excellent quality and exported worldwide. The territory is entirely marked by vineyards and olive groves.
A place where you can appreciate the real caracteristics of the Tuscany region landscape.

Assisi is not in Tuscany, but in Umbria, a couple of hours from Florence..so figure it out yourself if that's worth a detour during your time in Italy (really worth a visit though). But staying in Tuscany I would spend a day in Siena, half a day in San Gimignano, then would tour Chianti through the SS2 Road from Siena and Florence stopping by many or all the wonderful precious little towns that lay in between along the road. Then go to Arezzo for the nightlife (really near Florence and Siena), so you may get a hotel there for a night, then head to Lucca for a day. If you are in Tuscany during the summer then you HAVE to go to the Elba Island (especially in June and September) but of course that is the most time consuming stage of your visit. So dedicate at least three days to the island (45 minutes from mainland, two ferries per hour). It's already a lot, and of course there is a lot more worth a visit, but this will surely touch every spot of your touristic tongue. |

Siena hands down. Then San Gimignano, then Pisa, Lucca and Assisi. |
