What would you advise about transfers from rome airport?

I am going to rome for weekend in March.Travel agent offered transfers but it was quite expensive. She said that hotel is 25 mins away from airport. There is also a train station apparently but we will be arriving at 10pm.
What would you advise? Go for transfers through travel agent or get taxi at airport?
Cheers

I am italian and I strongly advise you to pay a little extra with the travel agent because taxis will charge you more and it's safer as well.

If you take the taxi option DO NOT, under any circumstances, get into a cab other than a white one with the seal of the city of Rome on the front doors.

Those are the official Roman taxis and there is an official rate for travel from the airport into Rome which is fixed by law (I believe it's currently about €40).

However, when you come out of the arrivals gate, you'll probably be pounced on by at least one person offering you help with your bags and wanting to take you to a taxi. Ignore them. Be rude, if necessary. They want to get you into an unofficial cab. If you go along with these scumbags, you WILL be ripped you off. What's more, you probably won't even be taken to the door of your hotel because the driver won't want to run the risk of being spotted by the staff, possibly having them intervene to make sure you don't pay what he's demanding and maybe even reporting him to the authorities.

Walk out the doors of the terminal and you will easily find a taxi rank outside with – almost certainly, even at 10 pm – cabs waiting. The trip into Rome can take up to an hour, but it should not be that bad at the time of day you'll be arriving. However, you may have to pay a night-time supplement.

There is a train station at Fiumicino which goes to Termini Station in central Rome every half hour. A single (one-way) ticket should cost in the region of €10. The trains run until 11:30 or so.

My other piece of advice for anyone visiting Rome is to be very aware of the risk of pickpockets. If ANYONE ever touches you – for whatever reason – assuming that they or an associate will be going for your wallet, purse or other valuables. I speak from personal experience. These people are professionals and you must either carry very little of any value (and nothing that's irreplaceable) or be constantly on your guard whenever people are around you.

Having said all that, Rome is brilliant and I'm sure you'll find your visit enjoyable and very interesting.

There is a train station at FCO airport and the fare to central Rome is about 12 Euros. There is an adequate metro system or you can get a taxi until you get your bearings.

It depends on your comfort level. Assuming you're arriving at Fiumicino airport, it would be cheaper to take the Leonardo Express train to Roma Termini station and take a taxi from there. The last train leaves the airport at 11:36 pm (cost 11 euro). You should be able to make the train if your flight isn't late. I'd do that and just catch a cab from the airport if the flight was very late, but I know my way around Rome and don't have a problem adjusting when necessary.

A taxi from the airport into Rome is pretty expensive (40 euro - there will probably be an additional supplement that late too) but is likely to be cheaper than the transfer. http://www.adr.it/portal/portal/adr/Fiumicino/Servizi/Come_raggiungerci/Arrivo_in_taxi_FCO
