Ive been to Venice several times, never stayed in the hotels, just day trips, but for the small size of the city, there are plenty of sights to see. First, the bridge of sighs, piazza san marco, gondola rides (definitely do it) and take some time to tour a glass blowing factory, beautiful work. Shopping is big here also, yet it can be pricey. Definitely worth it and 3 days will go quickly. Have fun.

You can go to Scoobit.com, the hotel search engine at http://www.scoobit.com Switch the language to English, then fill the form with city name (Venice) you can leave the address field blank. Then click on "Search hotel". I went to Best Western Hotel Olimpia Venezia, nice and clean place, loving it, but feel free to choose the hotel that best fits your needs. It's a safe website I've used many times so far, and you can book on line. If you are going only for three days don't move from Venice. It's such a beautiful city and there's so much too see.

try spending some time in dorsoduro and san polo as these two areas are off the main tourist path and are wonderful places to explore. I don't know particular hotels but I've booked apartments through this company and was very impressed http://www.holiday-velvet.com/venice

Buy the DK Eyewitness guide to Venice and Veneto and take it with you, and work your way through the book. Its brilliant.

Best hotel in Venice??? How much money have you got? They are amoung the most expensive hotels in the world. Eg, the Danieli and the Gritti Palace are two of the top hotels on Earth!

My family stayed in the hotel Villa delle Palme on the Lido across the Lagoon, reasonably priced, beautifully appointed etc etc. We caught the vaporetto (waterbus) across to St Marks. If you get an all-day pass, you can use it to go right around the Grand Canal and I think it even extended to Murano. We spent 2 days there. But 3 would have been better!
Have fun in Venice!

3 days is plenty of time.
I was there for 2 nights and felt I had seen it. I found that apart from St Marcos square where there is the duomo/doges palace ( which is good)and the square itself....there is not a huge amount to do.
I did not go on the gondolas....they were phenomially expensive.....going on the water buses are cheap and go around the main canals. you get to see things as well from them as you would on a horiffically expensive gondola.
I have heard that going to the Murano glass factory is very good...i missed that one.
There are lots of churches scattered around that you can visit...the rialto bridge is pretty neat....there is a market worth going to next to it.
Great gelato....I got shown a great one on some back street that was out of this world good!
I stayed in a good priced hotel called Hotel Messiner....it was good value for the money I paid and compared to other hotels there and I had the room at the end of a hall ( no lifts mind you) that had a stunning view over a canal! I loved it at night when I would open my windows! Worth a look at least.
