The faster trains (Eurostar) take a little over an hour and a half from Bologna to the Venice Santa Lucia station (the station on the Grand Canal). The standard fare is 22.80 euro in 2nd class. The regional trains take a little over two hours since they make more stops. The 2nd class fare from Bologna to Venice Santa Lucia is 8.20 euro. Note that the Mestre station is not the closest one - it's on the mainland about a ten minute ride from the Santa Lucia station which is actually in Venice.

You can check specific schedules at: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

I live near Bologna and take the train to Venice frequently.

The best route is the train, sure! the trip is for 2 hours, more of less, the station is not Venice, but Mestre, the nearest train station. this is the site of italian train:

you can look by yourself. Put Venezia in the first label, Bologna in the next. now you must choise the right days and the time about your trip and then click on INVIA. Maybe in the next window you must repeat the same.
Have a nice day!

Sorry for my bad english, I'm Italian.

Venice to Bologna it will take approximately 1 hour 57 mins. The distance is 158 km. Better u go through google map and then click on Direction button. Then can easily find the route
