You should have clarified whether yr holiday is addressed to stay in a resort without moving or instead to travel across the Country.
In the first case I would suggest end June/ mid.July when weather is generally sunny and temperature is not yet so hot.
If instead you are planning to visit towns and highlights spots then the best would be in spring (April/May) but be aware of absolutely avoiding Easter holidays period since all the sites are full of people and prices of everything are ugly rising. Since Easter of next year 2007 will fall on Apr.8th I would suggest you then to come and visit Italy from 04/15 on. As a rule March could be more rainy as April and believe me Italy is not so nice under the rain like it is with the shining sun....!!
If you need for further infos pls feel free to contact my email (click on my profile for the address).
Have a nice staying here and enjoy Italy when you decide to come.

Well I only visited there in the summer. If you plan on August you may run into many tourists and this is the time of year that many Italians are on vacation. I would say May or June. Ask again in about 4 to 5 weeks. I am visiting for Christmas!! :)

although we only have been one time, we went early to mid march and it was great. the weather during the day was nice, cool instead of warm since you do a lot of walking around. the crowds were also minimal at major sites like the vatican and the colosseum. in general, airfare and lodging was also cheaper. we had little difficulty getting to where we needed to and that was with driving our own rental car everywhere. all things considered, i would definately go at that time of year again.
