When do italians take vacation?

I want to go to italy for my honeymoon but am not sure when and if the country is basically shut down when the residents take their vacations

Most of the Italians take vacations during the first thee weeks of august.
This means that in that period locations at the seaside or on the mountains are overcrowded and hotels fully booked (and much much more expensive).
The main cities, on the contrary, are much nicer to visit and less less crowded than usual, since most of the residents go on holiday.
The only problem is that some shops, bars and restaurants might be shut down, but in a big city there is always something open.

Most Italians, in common with many Western Europeans, take their holidays in August. Very few places shut down, but it does mean that resorts, particularly at the beach, can be quite crowded.

Hi,
I think that you will have no problems for the italian's vacations...we take vacations in the normal periods for the normal works...and for the tourism work they take vacations during the most unpopular periods....when there is really a few people there...i think that you will have no problem with that....have a good trip! bye

starting from christmas:

- christmase break: 25 - 26 december, 1st january, 6 january (these are official holidays, but usually people takeat list a week-off during thi period)
- carnival: it starts the 24 of february
- easter: the 12 of april
- school are closed froma january to september
- offices, shops ect close on august (don't come to italy in august, everibody is on vacation in that period)

these are the main vacations!

ps. i suggest you to come in may it is the best period to visit italy!

The Italian summer vacation is called Ferragosto and takes place during the month of August.

I wouldn't recommend visiting then -- the tourists seem to outnumber the natives at that time.

September is a great month to visit.

c
avoid the first 2 weeks of august... although things are not shut down there is too much traffic and all the beaches are crowded... been there during that time and i didn't even want to go to my favorite beach...
