Late April is an excellent time to go (probably the best time of the year) it's one of the drier months, plenty of clear skies, temperatures are good and still not too many tourists (as there would be if you had to wait another month).
You can visit http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/climate-in-rome-italy.html for a better idea of the climate in rome italy and also a 4 day weather forecast.

For ideas on some fun things to do these are the top 10 Rome tourist attractions and free things to do in Rome Italy:

One of the answerers mentioned a Rome bus tour, I think that's an excellent way to orientate yourself and decide what's interesting and what you have time to visit. Here is some info on the hop-on-off Rome bus tour http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/rome-bus-tour.html and info on other Rome bus tours.

Enjoy

Firstly, if you like it, head to the Trevi Fountain. The legend is that if you throw a coin into the fountain you will one day return to Rome.

Piazza Navona has an amazing fountain, and there's nowhere better to sit al fresco with a pizza or a coffee. You'll pay through the nose for it, but you'll feel Italian.

The Vatican, of course. The view from St. Peter's Basilica is worth the climb. The museums aren't amazing but the Sistine Chapel is, again, worth it.

My favourite thing to do in Rome is simply to wander around discovering tucked away piazzas. It's a city to explore either on foot, or on scooter.

Galleria Borghese and the Borghese gardens. The gallery has an epic collection, and the gardens are lovely to stroll round on a sunny day...but by the zoo it can get smelly...

In terms of Roman history, The Forum is fantastic. If you can get a guide to it, the ruins will be far more interesting but if not it's still a great walk. The colesseum is very impressive but if you're not all about the history then you may be disappointed on paying the entrance fee. But still fantastic nonetheless. Also, the Pantheon.

I hope you have a lovely time.

Oh go to the Vatican, the Colessium, you should visit Pompeii too. I'm going in July and i absolutely can't wait but i am a huge latin geek

take a bus tour the first day you get there and they will show/ tell you everything from shopping to history to museums to religious...
get a travel book (lonely planet) for food, ask your hotel people what restourants are good ( i found when i was travelling this worked out best as they would tell you the less known restourants that they would eat at) dont eat near or around main tourist attractions (prices double)!

raros
Go to an internet cafe, log on and bemoan the fact that you are in Rome, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and are unable to think of anything to do!!

Get yourself a copy of the DK Eyewitness Guide for Rome and look in that.

When it comes to weather you should check out http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weather.php3?s=124261&refer= . It will give you weather statsa and it will give you an idea of what to expect.

Most people check out the following in Rome: Colosseum, Forum, Capitol, Trevi fountain, Pantheon, Spanish steps, the Vatican etc. Here is my trip report with photos and links http://gardkarlsen.com/rome_italy.htm . Maybe you can find some useful info there. I would also recommend that you get a DK Eyewitness Guide to Rome. I had that and it was of great help. You could also read Angels&Demons to get some entertainment :-)

When you're in rome you can also wandering without a destination, just looking around in the narrow roads around the area of the Pantheon and Navona Square. Stay in that area also for night life (Campo de' Fiori is famous for its pubs and restaurants) and enjoy the Roman atmosphere listening to the musicians in Navona Square.
You can visit Rome in different ways: walking alone (almost everything is walking distance), hire a tour guide for a full day tour or just for the monuments you need (colosseum, vatican museums, borghese gallery...) or hire a car with english speaking driver who will drive through the city giving information about the monuments.
In addition Rome is not far away to florence or naples, so if you stay more days, you can spend a full day in one of this 2 cities, renting a car, joining a group bus tour or hiring a car with driver.
Avoid Easter period because it's very crowded in rome, anyway I hope the weather will be good, ufortunately it's very difficult to forecast it, sometimes it rains, sometimes it's sunny... anyway it isn't cold and not even hot!
Hope this was helpful

ask your hotel or resort for leaflets regarding interested places to visit, or check online for Rome sightseeing and attractions.
