I had the same problem when I started planning my trip in October. I found that I can get into other European cities much cheaper, then take RyanAir into Italy. Your might try Madrid, Paris, or another city in Italy. A flight on RyanAir can be as little as $20.00. I am flying into London and my flight to Bologna will cost $10.00 plus $10.00 for my luggage. Once in Italy, everyone uses the trains.
If you need to fly directly into Italy, US to Bologna was the cheaper rate when I was first looking. Have fun. |

A great time to be in Rome is at Thanksgiving. The weather is cool and not too many tourists. Try Priceline.com. I once got a $400 round trip airline ticket to Madrid at Thanksgiving. |

We were in Rome in March and it was beautiful. It didn't rain at all, it was nice and cool and the tourist attractions weren't really full. I hear this is the same in September & October. Also, if you have issues with airfare I would highly suggest checking out cheap flights from LA to NYC and a separate flight from NYC into Rome. I just saw on southwest they had flights from LA to NYC for $79 each way. Also, check out Gate 1 travel agency. I went through them. For my fiancee and myself we went to Venice for 2 days, Florence for 3 days and Rome for 4 days (I booked Rome as a separate land only package). It included airfare from NYC, transfer from the airport in Venice to the hotel (although not necessary now that I know), train ticket from Venice to Florence, transfer in Rome to the airport, and all our hotel rooms for less than $2100 total. The only downfall was we flew Alitalia. The seats were TINY, the food terrible and they were off schedule the whole trip. But it was worth the money. |
