Between Carnival (after it is finished) and Easter (before it). It is nice and not crowded with tourists.

Carnival ends this year on Feb 5th

May and or mid September through October.

I think that there are two best periods : during the summer, when all Venice is an endless carnival, or, in 2008, between 25of Jan.-the5 of Feb. when is the real carnival.

The winter months are the best because the cooler the weather is, the less amount of sewage you are going to smell. In the summer, it can smell really disgusting there.

Dec. Through Feb. for sure. Its the rainy season, but its not bad, i spend all of last jan there and it rained once, for about 1/2 hour. The temp. was probably about mid 40's to 60's (occasionally.) Its beautiful that time of year, and theres hardly any tourists. And the ones that are, are European tourists so its not so bad :)
