When is the best time to go to Italy for beautiful countryside travel?

Generally speaking the best time to travel Italy would be late spring (end May-early June) or early fall (end Sept.-beg,October)
In any case weather is changing everywhere and at a few months distance it's impossible to say it in absolute.
Italy is however awesome even while it's raining and at least ,if you come in the time I've suggested, you'll have the advantage to pay fair prices (and not the crazy ones of the summer season, Christmas and Easter holidays,etc) and find all the spots are not so crowded since we, ther poor Italians, we are concentrating our holidays just on the periods I've suggested you to avoid....!!

i think in June...i live in Italy and the best season is in juny..july...in the summer...
for winter, for me, the best is February..

I lived in Italy for a year or two. We went touring at Easter, and we got some very good cut price hotels because it was out of season. The weather was beautiful, and the smell of the blossoms was overpowering. If you go to the south it is so unspoilt, not touristy at all. I loved it. Lecce, Ostuni, they are what Italy is about.

It depends on what you are looking for. I have been there many times both in spring and fall. I liked both times of the year for different reasons. In the spring, you might get a lot of rain and cool temperatures. I went in April and it was cool and rainy. It rained 8 out of the 10 days we were there. Sound bad? We had a great time. We were dressed for it (gore tex is my friend - boots and coat) and brought hats and gloves. We tromped around everywhere in our hiking boots nice, warm, and dry. There were hardly any tourists about. Very short lines for all the musuems and sights. Great evenings at the bar drinking sparkling wine, eating olives, and other small dishes. Wonderful!

I also went in May. May was very warm (80's at times) and filled with wildflowers and roses. There were long lines at all the sights - a lot more tourists. Restaurants and bars were crowded and you needed reservations.

In September, the weather is perfect. Warm (70's) and mostly dry. We had a little rain but mostly at night. The hard part was that it was our honeymoon and the hotel's roof leaked. It was a very expensive hotel along the Amalfi Coast and they could have cared less. September was lovely and many places were harvesting their crops. While we didn't get any further north than Rome on that trip, I would guess Tuscany would be great in the fall with lots of wine related harvest events.

Guess it depends where you are going to. if you're up North round the lakes, then it can be a bit chilly in spring, so i'd favour May, june. Further south, Puglia and calabria regions, then September has glorious sunshine and is not too warm... height of summer is too stlfling, it's a very dry heat and sun too intense for countryside. So there you go, May for north, september for south

Definitively during spring season because summer is too hot (believe me I'm Corsican!)
But be careful with the Italian flying companies, you'll never be very sure to be on time for your transfer to any other plane on your way back, they just don't know what they are doing..... It once happened to me to be ONE ENTIRE DAY late!

I think that October is a nice time of the year to be in Italy. And it's a little less tourist-y, too.
