I would recommend going in the spring sometime - or late fall. Summer is crowded and hot - winter is cold with the winds blowing up from the canals and can be bitterly cold at times. Spring and late fall are good weather-wise and not as many tourists.

As for the smell - it really does not smell anymore, they have rectified that problem. Flooding does occur, but not often.

If you are looking for a good time to go and have a blast, go during Carnevale in February !!! It's absolutely beautiful, full of unbelieveable costumes and people from all over the world - but it is crowded and you won't get the usual "feel" of Venice - but if you've already been, then it might be fun!

Fall or spring time.

Best time would be spring-before the heat and foul smells and before the floods. Was there in May-ideal!

After the spring tides in March but brfore May. September onwards but not near the harvest or hunters moon, the tide flood many parts for up to three hours a day.

Get a copy of the Aqua vista at the station tourist center. It shows the walkway areas in times of flood, and gives you reference to the audio signals preceeding flooding.

There is also a tide station just along from Ponte Rialto amonst the vaporetta stations, where you can get the times for the next days tides.

Try to avoid October - March as the city is prone to flooding then. I went in April and it was lovely. A little rain at times but very pleasant.

Anytime is great...
