When staying in Rome, Italy, is a day trip to Florence possible? Or, would I have to stay there?

I'm taking my mother with me and she expressed an interest in seeing Florence and Venice also. I'd like to take her to see it but funds are tight and I only have a week's worth of vacation time. I think Venice may be too far for a day trip but if I can do Florence, I think that may satisfy her. Any information you can offer would be a help to me. Thanks.

Of course you can!!!! I'm from Rome, and I went to Florence by train, you can do it! It's a 1h 36 min. ride, you'll just have to leave early in the morning and come back at night if you don't want to stay the night there. I'll give you the link to the train schedule so you can check on your own. The trains are very beautiful, you'll have fun!

You can certainly do it in a day, but it's hard and you would not do Florence justice, she deserves at least one or two full days visit (I actually can spend weeks there). It's a spellbinding city and easy to walk, whereas Rome is large, spread out and you need transportation within the city to see all the sights.
Happy Travels!

all u have to do is plan your trip.

Florence is about 3 hrs far (by car) from Rome and Venice is more, i think about 7hrs far.

If i were you i'd stick to 1 place.... Italy is very beautiful and there are lots to see in one place.
I think its possible to go to Florence though, you could spend 3 days in a place n 3 days in the other place.

Anyways have a great trip and be safe

You can take the Eurostar to Firenze and that only takes 1.5 hours. There really is so much to see there, that you might want to make a weekend trip out of it. I lived there for 9 months and still didn't see everything. For eating, you must go to Zaza's. Best restaurant!! Just go before 8 when the line starts to form. You will love it!

HI !
I think that 1 day from Rome to Florence isn't enough because by rapid train is about 2 hours of travel to go there ...you can do it ( it is possible but hard to do!!!) but in Florence there are many thing to visit...for ex. to visit "UFFIZI" you need about all the day....I suggest you to spend 1 night in Florence...so you have much time!!
ciao!!

As noted in other responses, a day trip to Firenze is easily done on the trains and I would highly recommend it. You can check schedules and prices at: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html.

It is possible to do a day trip from Rome to Venice if you really want to, but not necessarily recommended for everyone. Take a night train - you can sleep on the train, have a full day in Venice and return to Rome via a night train arriving early in the morning. I sometimes take day trips from Bologna or Verona to Paris, Vienna, Rome, Munich, Frankfurt, Zurich, Sorrento, or Salzburg this way ... but I find it easy to sleep on the train, don't have a problem with sharing a compartment with strangers, and am not dealing with jet lag to start with. A four bed cuccette from Rome to Venice is about 56 euro per person each way. This is a better option if you're spending some time in Rome and then moving on to Venice because the 56 euro for the night is cheaper than a hotel and you're not spending prime daylight sightseeing time sitting on a train.

The distance between Rome and Florence is the only high speed railway in Italy, you just need one hour and a half to get to Florence. The Pendolino is the fastest or you can use Rail Pass. on Rail Europ its about $36 on way in 2nd class. You can check the train timetable online at www.fs-on-line.com.

You can book a day tour from Rome to Florence check out www.viator.com or more train schedules www.eurail.com
