I stayed right near Piazza del Popolo. It's quite expensive but I was able to WALK to the Piazza di Spagna, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the "typewriter"/"wedding cake" monument and of course all of the amazing shopping on Via Del Corso, Via Dei Condotti, and Via del Babuino.

Stay close to Termini. It is cheap and provides direct bus/metro access to all of the touristy areas of town. Others will say centro storico, but I think the long distance to the metro outweighs the closer link to some attractions.

I think if you manage to find something near Trevi fountain you can be in walking distance from the main monuments of Rome.
You can look for an accommodation in the site below.
Have a good holiday in Rome

Rome is too big. You need to walk like a dog no matter where you stay. There is no way to get a place where is closed to every sight! I stayed at Palatino where is closed to the Colosseum. Many American & Japanese tourists stay at this hotel. Not very convenient, but reasonable price with continential breakfast everyday. Buses and subway station in front of the hotel. restaurants and supermarket across the street! (it's very important to know where a supermarket is in Rome! 2.5 Liter bottle wate is just 50 cents (euro) which is 8 times cheaper than the deli or ventors on streets!)
