There are a lot of good options here - choices depend on your interests, when you'll be here, how long you'll be here, and whether you've been anywhere in Italy before.
Certainly, the top tourists are some of the historic cities including Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples. There are a lot of interesting things to see and do in any of them and opportunities for easy day trips. If you're interested in natural beauty, consider the Amalfi coast, Cinque Terre, Sardegna, the lakes area, and the Alps.
There are a lot of interesting smaller cities/towns - Perugia, Siena, Lucca, Arezzo, Padova, Verona, Bergamo, Mantova, Ferrara, Treviso, ...
Italy has thousands of festivals that are worth participating in - both big events like Carnevale in various locations, Eurochocolate in Perugia, the Palio in Siena, Easter in Rome or Florence, various music festivals, and smaller events like the Marostica Chess spectacle, the Truffle festival or duck races in San Miniato, ...
If you're interested in beaches, Italy has a very long coastline with lots of varied types of beaches. |

Pretty much anywhere you go in Italy is bound to be beautiful. I'd recommend Rome (so you can see things like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Mouth of Truth, Catacombs - if you're into history and if not it's a cool city anyway). Venice is gorgeous, as is Positano & Lake Como (wherever that is haha). I've never been to Sicily, but that looks great too. Have fun :) |

I'm italian and i'm sorry because of my bad english... I'll try to be usefull for you, 'cause i know my country very well...I come from Milan but my favourite place is Florence that is wonderfull with Uffizi's museum, with all the monuments, the churches and everything describing our history.. I love Lake Maggiore, is very romantic and fascinating.. Lake Como is nice but not as Lake Maggiore, i'm sure.. Dolomiti are something incredible, that takes the breath away... ....I think Italy is beautiful everywhere, but it also dipends from the tastes of anyone... If you like something historical, you have to go to Rome, Florence, Venice..If you like sea-places you have to go to Costiera Amalfitana, Sicily and Capri.. Finally if you like places for shopping, go to Milan... I hope i was not boring...and i hope you'll "accept" my orrible english... BYe..

Venice (hit Bergamo, Murano, and Lido Beach while you're here)--very cool city, st mark's, take a gondola around the city, murano has the glass blowing, and bergamo famous for lace, lido beach is a cool spot to hang out and grab some pizza as well
Florence (gorgeous art and churches, go to the club space electronica!)
Tuscany (do a vineyard tour with wine and food--amazing scenery)
Rome (collesium, trevi fountain, spanish steps, ruins, campo di fiore)
Pompeii (old city that was buried underground because of a volcano, now parts are uncovered, AMAZING history)
Naples (pizza, pizza)
Pisa (Leaning Tower)
Sorrento (my favorite!!!!!! gorgeous...get a hotel that is built into the cliffs overlooking the mediterraen...you will not regret it....great shops too and good food....also take a boat to Capri while you are here and do the chair lift)
Taormina (in Sicily--gorgeous! make sure to get some almond granita for sure, it's delish!)
