These are some of my favourite places in Italy.

Rome (and Vatican City)
Cinque Terre
Verona (and Lake Garda)
Venice
Florence
Bologna
Lucca
Siena
Orvieto
Pompeii

You can organise the route into something like this:
Rome - Lucca - Cinque Terre - Verona - Venice - Bologna - Florence - Siena - Orvieto - Pompeii - Rome

The places above give a good mix of things to see in terms of arts, architecture, natural landscape (Tuscany) and "seascape" (Cinque Terre, Lake Garda), culture and history. They also give a feel of contrast, e.g. modern feel in Verona vs the medieval city of Siena, or the majestic location of Orvieto on the top of a steep hill vs the floating city of Venice with the intricate labyrinth of canals and waterways. There really are a lot to explore in Italy, it's amazing.

I know it's quite biased to the northern part of Italy, particularly for Tuscany and Veneto. I admit to not having travelled the south as extensively as I would have like.

One of these days, one of these days... ;)

Personally, I did not like Bologna.

my list is:

Rome
Vatican
Tuscany
Florence
Venice
Madonna Di Campiglio
Verona (town of Romeo and Juliette)
Milan
Napoli

I went to these places to either stay in or visit and can recommend them all:
Verona - lovely setting and feel
Venice - just different to the others but is small
Sienna - lovey medieval town
Montepulciano - hilltop village which is great to escape to and great views of landscape
Rome - just has lots of things to see
Pompeii - was a lot bigger than I thought and was really interesting and seedy!!!
Florence - has lots of pretty buildings and art to see but very busy
Lucca - lovely town not far from Florence and is a great escape from the hoards in florence
Bologna - medieval feel again but a nice city to visit

I loved Italy as it offered so much.
