WHERE are you flying from?
If its in europe try www.skyscanner.net
if its somewhere else try www.expedia.com

You could try looking to fly into Rome or maybe even Frankfurt ( which are major airports and you will have more options) then take a train to venice...for italy the train service is trenitalia.it. You could even take a bus which would be cheaper try www.eurolines.com

Where are you flying from? You forgot to mention. Anyway try Skyscanner.net. To book a good and cheap hotel in Venice you can go to http://www.scoobit.com and fill the form with city name (Venice). I stayed in the first hotel on the right: nice and clean place. But feel free to choose the hotel that best fits your needs. Scoobit.com is to me the best website for hotels in Italy. You can book on line and there are no booking fees.

It would depend on where you are flying from. Kayak I have normally found to be good. I have found a site that lists the best ways to get to Venice depending on where you are from and also reasonable accommodation. You can try this site http://www.venice-italy-veneto.com/flight-to-venice.html or Kayak. Generally try to stay a little distance away from St Marks and you will save a lot of money.

you can take the train and visit some cites...Padua (padova), verona, vicenza, bassano, marostica,este,bologna...you can go to the Garda Lake (lago di garda) these are all a day's trip.
if you want to move for a few days you can visit toscana with florence or expetially if you are cattolic, you can go to Assisi (S.francesco and S.Chiara),san giminiano, gubbio...are very very beautyful!!
in the north west of italy you can visit two beautyful lake, the como lake (Lago di como) and the lago maggiore with his three beautyful island:isola bella, isola madre and isola dei pescatori.
If you want to go to the beach you can go to jesolo, sottomarina (but idn't like it) or rimini.

Ouch, it's gonna be pricey to get there, partly because you're flying from the west coast, and partly because you're traveling in the peak travel season. I'd imagine the cheapest the fares will get is about $800 roundtrip, probably involving a stop in London, Paris, Rome, or Frankfurt. To be honest though, I'd avoid booking now. Airlines are always having sales, especially in this economy they will need to. Right now sales that are going on are for travel through May. So I'd keep checking sites for airlines such as American, United, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, and Delta. See when they have sales and book. For BA, Virgin, Lufthansa, and AF you'd have to go to their main hub (ie. London/Paris/Frankfurt) and then get a flight to Venice.

Also check sites like kayak.com often. Good luck.

Hmmm, where are you flying from? I am going to give you the only piece of advice that was given to me for finding cheap travel deals, and it works to this day... Compare as many travel websites as you can as often as you can. Since you have a few months, start searching today and search the flights or hotels or whatever you need every week until the month before you are going. If anything is unusually cheaper, book it on that date. I would definitely recommend checking out the website BookMe. You can compare ALL the reputable travel sites from one location, and save tons of money. Good luck and check out the link below, and you will be all set.
