It's a good idea to buy tickets in advance for the opera. Most of them sell out.
There are lots of possibilities for seeing an opera here in Italy. One excellent choice would be in Verona. The opera is held under the stars in the Arena, an ancient Roman colosseum in the middle of Piazza Bra. You can see the schedule & prices here: http://www.arena.it/ Prices range from 23 euro to 198 euro depending on where you sit.
Schedules and tickets for La Scala in Milan are here: http://www.teatroallascala.org/ Prices depend on the event. The best seats can be quite expensive; standing room can be pretty cheap when it's available.
You can also go to an opera in Venice: http://www.culturalitaly.com/things-to-do/operas-concerts-events/venice/schedule.htm , Rome: http://selectitaly.com/events.php?product_id=13&city_id=7 , or many other places.

Every major city has it's opera house, so it really depends on where you're going.

The most obvious place is La Scala in Milan. For the absolute cheapest nosebleed seats, it's about 100 Euros.
In the Mood
You can see the opera in every big city and small town of Italy. Each theatre has its own internet site. The most famous theatres like La Scala and La Fenice sell quickly and it's almost impossible to get tickets when big names are performing in whatever theatre.
The easiest way is going on summer festivals. Besides Arena di Verona, there is the Puccini's Festival in Torre Del Lago , the beautiful Teatro Sferisterio in Macerata, Terme di Caracalla in Rome, just to name the most famous.
