Don't stay in a hotel - try a bed & breakfast or convent. If you do a Yahoo search you can find some inexpensive convents but that may not be your thing - they charge per person so it might cost less to do a B&B.

We stayed at a B&B near the Vatican and it was in a residential area so a bit cheaper, but near the subway and bus lines. It was nice to be with the locals instead of tourists too. Here's where we stayed: www.romabandb.it - I highly recommend it.

Here's a site to find more: www.bedandbreakfast.com

You can go to Scoobit.com, the hotel search engine at http://www.scoobit.com Switch the language to English, then fill the form with city name (Rome). Then let the research begin. You are gonna find many hotels, and choose the hotel that best fits your needs and budget.

It depends on the time of year, but as an American living in Italy who often helps friends with hotels in Rome, "cheap" is just hard to find. Most hotels are 200 Euro or more per night (about $320 dollars). As others have suggested, try a hostel or a B&B may be a bit cheaper. Good luck!

I'm staying at Mr. Frills. I booked through venere.com
Great website because it has hotel reviews, sometimes I will cross check with tripadvisor.
