Hey, I've just been looking for hotels today :)
www.laterooms.com had some good deals, there are several small hotel b&b's that are right by the Terminal (train station) where the shuttle takes you to from the airport. you can filter by distance fomr centre of Rome and lowest price to find something suitable. There was one I saw that was only £60 a night for a 4 person apartment room. I can't remember the name but have a look on the site. It had great reviews and perfect lcoation, though if the children are older it might be better to get seperate rooms...Actually there were quite a few like this where you get more of a personal touch!
also www.Venere.com has some great advice and cheap hotels. this is where I found the one for me and my partner. You can filter your serach by location, price, etc and has a little map so you can see where it is in relation to everything else, I found this really handy as I dont kno Rome, haven't been since I was 11! They were also quite cheap.
You can also go to hostels and get 4 bed dorms if you really are on a tight budget.
One last one I'd mention that I found today, was http://www.italyrents.com/
you can get some cheap apartments based all over Rome, and they give you a lot on information on where abouts.
With small children I'd say go near the Terminal, it will make life a lot easier because this is also where you can get the mettro to take you all over the city.
hope this helped and have a good time!! You're going the same time as us so may be ill see you there! Lol

Just google hotels Italy, fill in the districts and book on line never walk in because there's no discount. Get a hotel which is in walking distance to your destination, they will also list the price of the room as well as show you how it looks like. Its all very simple. Have a memorable trip and beware of the gipsy kids.

I like Octopustravel.com for hotels - there is usually a good choice.

Also I disagree with the suggestion that you pick one near termini - especially if you have children with you as it can be a bit dodgy round there, especially at night.

The region around the Vatican is a good bet and most of the sights are within walking distance and there are good bus links if children are small and can't walk too far. But of course in the end you will have to compromise on location versus price, but anyway they have a wide selection.

During my last trip I came across a website called http://www.cheaphotel-s.com . It has quite a large variety of hotels. You might wanna give it a try.

Roma, an amazing city. Watch out for young boys who pick your pockets near big tourist areas, however. Search for hotels here:

It depends on where you are going to. In the centre of ITaly, Toscana and Umbria, I mean, a chep way of staying is "agriturismo"
www.agriturismo.it or www.agriturismo.com
If you are looking for a hotel you can book by www.expedia.it (remeber .it and not .com!!!) or by www.venere.it
If you can be more precise about the place I can suggest you a better solution.
Enjoy your trip!

San Jouan Guest House
Located in the heart of the city, this hotel is situated a few steps away from the Colosseum and from the main historical attractions.

This is the most reasonable hotel for the location and price.

Note that Rome is extremely expensive.

If you agree to sleep about 15 kms from the center, you will start to find better price.

Check here, and select "Advanced options" and put the kms desired from the center.
Then from the results, select: "Families with Young Children" or "distance"

I stayed at hotel called Sellecchia in Rome. abut 5 minutes away from the termini station. walking distance to the coliseum, the spanish steps, the fountain of Trevi, the Sta Maria Maggorie church and many other restaurants.

You can also find good deals at: www.Venere.com
