Where in Italy should I go for Christmas?

I am going to Ischia for New Years Eve, but the hotel I go to is closed until Dec 27, and there is nothing to do on that island before then (I think). So, where is a nice place to spend Christmas in Italy?? (Its just me and my boyfriend.)

Rome is quite nice for visitors at Christmas. Google some pics and blogs and you'll quickly see for yourself. And since the Vatican's right there, you sorta get two heavily Christmas-traditional cities in one go. Besides, some of Rome's piazza's and shops are second-to-none worldwide when it comes to doing it up properly for Christmas. Enjoy!

Naples - considering the bad reputation the city has Christmas is one holiday that all celebrate in grand fashion.

My family spent Christmas in Rome.

We are not Catholic or even religious, but we thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Pope in person delivering his Christmas message in St Peters. It is something I have seen on TV on the news every year, so it was great to see a significant event like this.

The markets were on in the Piazza Navona every day.

There were plenty of restaurants open, and it is a good time to see the Vatican museums (which include the Sistine Chapel) without the crowds.

We also got to be experts in Presepi (nativity scenes). It was loads of fun going into all the churches and enjoying the scenarios (even though we are not religious)

Wherever you decide to go, Buon Natale!

If you are going to Ischia, Naples is a very good alternative close by. It is very famous for its Xmas market of "presepi" (nativity scenes; cribs), besides being a beautiful city full of art and history. Someone suggested you go to Venice. Well, it is a gorgeous city and you may go but not if it is primary for you to be in the Xmas atmosphere. Not much is done in Venice on Xmas.

If you are Catholic, I cannot imagine a better place than the Vatican. If you have family with you, I'd go to Breuil-Cervinia at the base of the Matterhorn. If it were just me and a girlfriend / spouse, I'd say Venice. If I were by myself, I'd want to be in Rome with lots of people and lots to do.
