Where in Italy would you recommend for a weekend visit at this time of year?

We like architecture and walking, shopping & nice food if that helps at all...

Definitely Venice. It has all you need but without the heat and crowds at this time of year. Although Venice is famous for the canals there's plenty of walking in the city and loads of great walks/horseriding just outside the city.

Earlier in the year it's often cold and wet and in the summer/autumn it's way too crowded.

Florence (Firenze) is also highly recommended for the same reasons and if you're in the UK you can get direct flights with EasyJet and Meridiana.

Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice - they all have all that you need and the weathe should be quite clement. My fav is Venice

Went to Rome for the weekend early May the weather was great.
If you stick with the restuarants/bars down the side streets from the famous sites its a lot cheaper.
The Sistern chapel is not open on Sunday [ unless this has changed.
Had the lovliest prawn salad in a small bar which was a short walk from St Pauls.

April/May is a great time to go because the tourist season starts a little later in June. The climate is similar to ours, if you want some place that'll be fairly warm, I suggest the Amalfi Coast.
